Capabilities: ERI provides the services of highly trained research and development personnel in the conduct of sponsored research and development of new products and processes. The general areas of expertise offered include mechanical engineering research, materials engineering, mechanical behavior, property evaluation and high pressure vessel engineering. Specific applications have included large caliber weapons research, advanced testing methods and analysis to measure material and structural responses of a wide variety of materials and components and novel manufacturing methods for advanced, special purpose materials. We have developed pressure vessels with significantly improved fatigue lives, stronger and more reliable materials handling equipment and large capacity high pressure generating equipment including a 4.5 million pound press. Independent research conducted by Elmhurst has lead to a number of inventions, patents and patent applications. Testing and evaluation services have included the application of accepted industry consensus standards and codes to determine a variety of chemical, physical and mechanical properties of substances and performance characteristics of products. The most important aspect of this service is Elmhurst's ability to provide expert evaluation of the consequences of the findings. Specific tests that can be performed include but are not limited to: asbestos, lead based paint, radon, soils, pressure vessel tests (static and fatigue), mechanical property tests (tensile, fatigue and fracture properties), product performance tests on such products as high pressure vessels and high pressure equipment components, chairs, furniture, chain saws and other mechanical and electro-mechanical devices. This testing has resulted in code verifiable life extension of exhausted components producing significant cost avoidance. Testing facilities include an Instron 1350, 55 kip servo-hydraulic test system with Model 8500 control electronics, unique high pressure fatigue fixtures developed by ERI and various high pressure generating equipment.
